Exciting news! Some of you may remember many years ago when I felt that the Lord had put on my heart to open a birth center in Africa. The hope for a birth center has been on my heart ever since. Even though at that time I had no plans to become a midwife, the Lord has made it clear over the last few years that this is the direction He wanted me to go. To that end, I have been involved with birthing babies as a Doula and a trained birth assistant for the past 3 1/2 years . During the past year I've been working towards my midwifery licensing. By God's grace and blessing, I have attended over 125 births so far.
In
March 2009 I had the opportunity to spend time at Kisiizi Hospital in
Uganda, Africa and work in Labor and Delivery. It was a dream come true
in so many ways. I was able to use all the skills that I had been learning;
including catching 10 babies and on several occasions to suture as well!
Although it was a wonderful experience for me, the birthing environment in Uganda is despicable in most rural areas. The lack of the simplest things; that we take for granted here in America, like running water, instruments for birth such as sharp scissors, or sutures, simple medication for hemorrhage , resuscitation equipment for newborns. Even a sanitary pad or something to dress their precious new baby, other than a torn piece of fabric.
Well, now I have a chance within A Heart 4 Africa to see that vision come to fruition with the help of another ministry called ARCHE INTERNATIONAL. I will be returning to Fort Portal along with Kathy Hichborn from ARCHE INTERNATIONAL in October, to look for a location and start the process of opening a birth center!!!!
Our mission is to provide a place for the women of Uganda to give birth in a safe, clean, well equipped facility that will increase infant and maternal outcomes. Women will be treated with compassion, respect, and love by well trained Doctors and Midwives.
We need your help
and we are asking even though many of us are
facing financial difficulties at this time, which makes it even more
difficult to ask for your help. But, remember that every little bit
helps! So, were asking that you prayerfully consider becoming
a partner with us in seeing this vision become a reality. We would be
eternally grateful.
Please keep us in your prayers even if you are not in a position to help financially. If you would like to become a partner in this vision for the Lord in some other way, please feel free. You may have connections with other people or organizations that would be of benefit or you may want to go to Uganda to help and provide hands-on help, please let us know. We are waiting for those of you that the Lord is calling!
Thank you for your loving support me and for Heart4Africa over these
past 7 years. May the Lord have His hand of blessing upon each one of
you and your families. With a heart to serve our Lord, Sherill
